Description of impact

The handbook "Satellite Data for Public Administration", a collective work commissioned by the Polish Space Agency, received a national publication award in the 4th edition of the Polish Ministry of Economic Development and Technology’s competition in the field of geoinformation. This recognition highlights the handbook’s practical value and its contribution to strengthening the use of satellite data in public administration.

This handbook is the only publication of its kind on the Polish market. It contains both a comprehensive theoretical section and a section containing a range of practical tips for both beginners and advanced users of satellite data. It presents a catalog of the most important satellite Earth observation missions worldwide, identifies satellite data sources, data processing tools, application examples, best practices, and, finally, trends in the development of satellite systems and technologies in the field of Earth observation. The handbook serves as a guide for anyone interested in acquiring or deepening their knowledge of satellite remote sensing. It presents the current state of Earth observation worldwide and provides information previously unavailable in a comprehensive, reliable, and accessible manner. Examples of satellite imagery applications come largely from the achievements of Polish scientists and entrepreneurs conducting research and implementation work focused on the needs of the Polish administration. This unique content of the handbook is reflected in its rich illustrations, which facilitates comprehension and makes it an attractive resource for students, teachers, and officials. We have recorded over 4 000 downloads.

This comprehensive 450-page work was prepared by 23 authors, scientists/academic teachers/satellite remote sensing specialists representing 7 universities, edited by Prof. Beata Hejmanowska, PhD, DSc, Eng., and Piotr Wężyk, PhD, DSc, Eng., Prof. of the URK.
