Research summary
Hisham Haydar is a PhD candidate in Economics at the University of Luxembourg and a Research Associate at the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER). His research lies at the intersection of labor economics, optimal taxation, and social choice theory, with a particular focus on fairness, inequality, and the role of opportunity. He develops discrete choice models of labor supply where individuals select among discrete job options rather than continuous hours, allowing a sharper distinction between inequalities due to preferences and those due to job availability. Hisham combines structural modeling with advanced machine learning techniques to estimate individualized job opportunity sets and preference heterogeneity. He is also actively involved in EUROMOD-based microsimulations to evaluate the redistributive impact of tax-benefit policies across job choices. His recent work integrates these approaches into welfare dominance frameworks to assess policy reforms under principles of compensation and responsibility. His research is conducted in close collaboration with François Maniquet and the UNSASSUB project.
