Personal profile

Research summary

Karolina is a landscape architect with a PhD in Environmental Sciences (urban forestry) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) focusing on geospatial methodologies in urban studies. She contributes to the Artificial Intelligence working group in the UDM at LISER. She is an affiliated member of the European Forum on Urban Forestry (EFUF) and Geographical Society (PTG) - Branch of Remote Sensing.

Karolina’s research focuses on the application of new technologies in urban environmental studies, with a strong emphasis on remote sensing, 3D LiDAR technology, and AI tools. Her work includes analyzing the dynamics of cityscape changes, defining landscape metrics, examining the 3D structure of urban forms, exploring aspects of property markets, and assessing ecosystem services provided by urban trees. Her goal is to apply innovative mix-methods to addresses critical socio-spatial challenges associated with the outcomes of individual behaviours (i.e. residential decisions, greening practices) and the impacts of policies (e.g. urban densification, land use changes, environmental regulations) on climate change (e.g. urban heat islands, biodiversity loss).

Karolina is currently involved in monitoring land availability and consumption for housing as part of the Housing Observatory project, commissioned by the Ministry of Housing and Spatial Planning in Luxembourg, as well as in HypeRent project (FNR). She is co-leading an internal project (VIS3- Virtual Interactive Support for Social Sciences) as part of ccEXPAR. She is also participating in the international project Li4LaM: Land Information for Land Management (in collaboration with TU Wien, BOKU Wien, University of Ljubljana, University of Agriculture in Krakow, and universities in Ethiopia), where she creates teaching materials on the use of remote sensing for Ethiopian universities and partners.

Karolina has participated in interdisciplinary projects: iTre-es (NCN, Poland), GeoCentre of Excellence (European Funds), commissioned research for State Forests and National Parks and SusDens (Luxembourg-Belgium). She is a co-author of the handbook commissioned by Polish Space Agency: Satellite Data for Public Administration, awarded by the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology.
