Global Media Monitoring Project

Project Details

Description

The Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) is the largest global study on gender representation in the media. Launched in 1995 during the United Nations' World Conference on Women in Beijing, this five-year initiative analyzes the presence of women and men in news media, assessing both quantitative data (presence, roles, topics) and qualitative aspects (stereotypes, gender bias). Supported by a global network of volunteers — NGOs, academics, journalists — the GMMP has expanded its reach, growing from 71 countries in 1995 to 114 in 2015, reflecting a growing interest in gender equality in the media. Despite this mobilization, results show slow progress: media coverage continues to reflect a male-centered worldview, shaped by sexist prejudices. The GMMP aims to raise awareness among professionals and the public, promote fairer media practices, and highlight persistent gaps in both traditional and digital media. The ultimate goal is to foster a balanced representation of the sexes, which is essential for a fully informed and equitable society.
For Luxembourg, the National Council of Women (CNFL) ASBL and CID | Fraen an Gender ASBL have been participating in the international Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) since 2010. LISER has just signed a contract with these two associations to carry out the 2025 report; this is the first time LISER has been invited to collaborate on this project. The tasks to be carried out are:
• Data entry of information collected on a specific day, not disclosed in advance to the media,
• Statistical analysis,
• Writing a national report and summary,
• And presenting the results.
