Abstract

A map is an essential tool for communicating geographical information. However, this tool has its limits that we examine here by applying cartographic transformations to locations on a public transportation network. Due to recent developments in information technology (e.g. multimedia), new representational methods have emerged that potentially extend the limits of current (static) maps. Computer animations, as one example of such novel techniques, are useful to emphasize shape changes, thus have great potential in depicting the construction process of cartographic transformations. By adding interactivity, the map reader has the opportunity to control the depiction, and pro-actively reconstruct the transformation process of the depicted data. The map thus becomes a new means for communicating, understanding and reflecting on spatial data. La carte est un outil incontournable pour communiquer des informations géographiques. Néanmoins, elle a des limites, montrées ici à travers l'exemple des transformations cartographiques de positions appliquées aux transports. Aujourd'hui, de nouvelles solutions de représentation, possibles grâce aux progrès de l'informatique et du multimédia, permettent de repousser ces limites. Parmi ces solutions, l'animation met notamment l'accent sur les changements de formes et montre comment les transformations se construisent. En y ajoutant l'interactivité, la carte animée et interactive permet au lecteur d'agir directement sur la carte et de participer à sa conception. La carte apparaît alors comme un nouveau moyen de compréhension, de réflexion et de communication.
