Paolo BALMAS is a PhD candidate in Economic Geography working on China's financial and banking networks in Luxembourg and Europe. His research aims at analyzing China's geoeconomic expansion into Europe and the role of Luxembourg's financial center in China's integration into global finance. This research addresses two important gaps in the academic literature, which are the increasing relevance of Luxembourg's financial center in global dynamics and China's economic expansion through the angle of Chinese banks' agency. In addition, this research responds to various calls for integrating financial geography and international political economy. Specific research interests are: 1. The spatial organization of Chinese banks in Luxembourg and Europe; 2. The role of Luxembourg in the internationalization of China's currency, the renminbi; 3. China's state-led global production networks of finance; 4. The position and role of Luxembourg in EU-China economic relations; 5. The role of China in the history of Luxembourg's financial center. Paolo's research is funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund under the AFR Individual scheme (2018-2021).
