N2 - This report describes the project “Engaging Women in Luxembourg's Cleaning Sector: Co-Designing Health Solutions (WISH)”, which was funded by a Seed Grant from the Competence Centre on Experimental and Participatory Research (ccEXPAR) at LISER in 2025. ccEXPAR is a cross-departmental initiative to improve awareness of and skills in experimental and participatory research methods.
The WISH study collected data from women (who comprise the majority of those) working in the cleaning sector in Luxembourg about their perceptions and experiences of health issues in the workplace. The data collection was a first step towards identifying the main issues and potential solutions to inform the co-design of an intervention to improve the health and wellbeing of this group. The study entailed a two-step process utilising qualitative and participatory methodologies. The first step comprised semi-structured interviews with eight people representing seven different key institutional stakeholders (employee, employer, health, gender equality, immigrant workers) and the second step was a workshop (World Café) with eleven women working in the cleaning sector. Data analysis revealed the main factors arising from the psychosocial work environment that affected the women. These included the organisational culture and function, workload and work pace, work schedule, environment and equipment, interpersonal relationships at work, role in organisation, career development, and home-work interface. Impacts on health (physical, mental, and stress) and organisations (sick leave) were also discussed. The project started to identify potential solutions to address specific psychosocial work environment factors, which will be developed further in a larger follow-up project.
