Living and working in the city: Hyper-commodified rental housing under platform capitalim

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the International Journal of Housing Policy, this internationally-renowned journal and the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence jointly organised a two-day symposium hosted at the University of Glasgow. In this context, I was kindly invited by Sophia Maalsen - editor-in-chief of the journal and Senior lecturer at the University of Sydney - and Mark Stephens - Professor at the University of Glasgow, member of the journal's board and organiser of the symposium, to give a talk in the second plenary panel on "housing futures". The two other presenters were Emma Baker, Director of the Australian Centre for Housing Research at the University of Adelaide, and Sophia Maalsen herself.
My talk was about the emergence of new rental housing segments since the global financial crisis, and in particular, the provision of shared housing for young people in European cities in the immediate post-GFC period and the more recent development of Hyper-Commodified Housing Products, with a focus on the Luxembourg context. I concluded my talk with reflections for future housing research, and I pointed to the need for housing studies to take digital transformations and their impact on housing provision as seriously as other research fields do.
