Résumé

This chapter explores the evolution of human settlements from industrial specialization towards service-oriented, ecologically integrated communities. Unlike the industrial era, where settlements were built around dominant industries, post-industrial ecovillages specialize in service-oriented lifestyles that prioritize shared values, ecological stewardship, and cultural identity. Central to this transformation is Ecocracy (Symbiocracy), a governance approach that integrates physical, social, and spiritual dimensions of life, emphasizing reciprocity, cooperation, and interdependence between humans and ecosystems.

Ecovillages embody these principles by fostering transformative services—initiatives that create lasting positive change in well-being for individuals, communities, and the environment. Rather than relying on expensive infrastructure, they cultivate ‘intangible infrastructure’ through culture, education, and collective governance. Processes of enculturation and socialization are redefined to instil ecological literacy, empathy towards non-human life, and cooperative values, aligning with posthumanist ethics and supporting the emergence of the Symbiocene, an era of reciprocal flourishing between human and more-than-human worlds.

Three case studies illustrate these ideas: Tamera (Portugal), focusing on peace education and ecological restoration; Quinta do Coelho Azul (Portugal), specializing in permaculture education and regenerative living; and Rožkalni (Latvia), promoting therapeutic living and social inclusion. Together, these intentional communities demonstrate how specialization strategies can operationalize Ecocracy, offering scalable models for sustainable, inclusive, and symbiotic settlements.
