The analysis of economic inequality in Egypt – and, more broadly, in Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries – has recently sparked an interesting debate regarding its extent and trends, generating quite a bit of controversy (e.g., Verme et al. 2014, Ianchovichina et al. 2015). Rising inequality has been cited as one of the factors behind the uprisings in Arab countries by media and academics.
