Populism is at an all-time high, with over 25% of nations currently governed by populists. This policy brief discusses the economic and political consequences of populist leaders. Using a novel database covering over 60 countries from 1900 to 2020, the authors find that populist leadership has negative and long-lasting consequences for economic growth and other economic dimensions. They also find evidence that populist rule leads to the erosion of democratic institutions.
